An Explanation of Why I am So Good at Killing Chickens

Linked above is a great article by Lily Gordon who I was a camper with at Treetops. Lily, who refrained from participating in the chicken harvest, does a stellar job at de-sensationalizing the process of ‘making food’. As a camper at Treetops from 2000-2006 and a volunteer/kitchen staff/counselor from 2007-2011 I had the opportunity to take part, cook the birds, and then walk campers through the process themselves.

When I was 13 years old and offered the choice to do chicken harvest I made myself a promise. I promised that if I did not do it I would become a vegetarian. That’s a big move for a person who considers bacon a food group. I did do chicken harvest, I am not a vegetarian and I gained respect for one of the most popular food sources in the world.

So, If you need a organic, humanly-raised, free-range chicken slaughtered in the most ethically sound way possible hit me up. If you can’t comprehend how someone could do such a thing and you eat meat please stop. You’re in denial and being a hypocrite.
