Plunged into the Dark Ages – a Week Without Wifi

I cannot over dramatize how jarring it has been to not have wifi at ‘home’. I am in the process of moving into a new apartment. It’s been a multi-week event and, in addition to finding a couch and covering the very good view into our shower from outside, we have been sluggish in figuring out the whole wifi shindig. As a child of the ultra-connected era, I like myself some wifi. I like it so much, and I am so spoiled by it, that I forgot that it has to be set up and paid for. A magical wifi genie does not, despite my sincerest wishes, just appear and let me watch the new episode of Vampire Diaries on Hulu.

So, for the past week or so minus a few days at my grandmothers, I have been traipsing from free wifi hotspot to free wifi hotspot in NYC. I can confirm that the two Starbucks within a five block radius of me are playing the same music…on loop. But the one on 110th has better wifi along with staff who are less likely to yell at me for not buying a drink. Perhaps they see my wifi-less confusion on my face and take pity on me. Conference calls have been a unexpected pain point as I want to be able to be online but to be online I have to be somewhere with a high number of people producing a large amount of noise which instantly makes me the annoying person with buzz in the background who has to put their phone on mute.

The baristas are starting to look at me accusatorially so I will soon change location once again but prior to signing off I am proud to announce that as of friday I will be the purchaser of a in-home wifi network that I will appreciate, care for, and take full advantage of 🙂
