Sword & Plough – “Repurposed for a Purpose”

Sword & Plough Image

Sword & Plough, founded by Emily and Betsy Nunez, turns military surplus material and eco-leather into durable and fashionable bags by employing military veterans in Los Angeles.

Plus, the bags are super cute. And might land you one of the hotties in the photo above. But no promises.

In late February, hundreds of the world’s best young entrepreneurs and business leaders stood in line, enduring a mind-numbing drizzle, to see the Kairos 50 (which Sword & Plough was a part of) on the floor New York Stock Exchange. On TV, the space looks downright grandiose. When crammed with a few too many people it feels closer to a sardine can. While bee-lining to a slightly less packed corner, the skies opened, rainbows appeared, and I saw handbags. Not just any handbags – handbags with a quadruple bottom line. I now believe in Unicorns.

Emily and Betsy are serious about doing well by doing good. These girls are legit. Emily is a officer in the US Army Military Intelligence Branch and Betsy is a creative powerhouse. Together they have created a company that rivals industry leaders in sustainability and social good.

Sword & Plough’s Quadruple Bottom Line:

People: Sword & Plough cares for its veteran sewers and community of supporters who are also its biggest source of inspiration.

Purpose: Sword & Plough facilitates veteran employment, reduces waste, and increases awareness of military and veteran reintegration issues.

Planet: Sword & Plough bags are made in the good ole’ USA using recycled materials and eco-leather.

Profit: Sword & Plough is a registered LLC.

For years my favorite duffle bag has been a military surplus one I purchased in Quebec when I was in high school. The idea of bags with the same feel but even better construction and utility blew my mind. I would have bought every single bag right then and there. However, they are not yet in production. So, I am calling on every person who reads this to help me get my dream bag (and yours whether or not you know it yet)!

The Sword & Plough Kickstarter Campaign launched yesterday with a goal of $20,000. In less than 24 hours it has more than doubled its goal with $55,940 from 303 backers! The campaign still has 29 days left. We have an opportunity to make this HUGE!

My Challenge to you:

1. Watch the Sword & Plough Video

2. Donate on Kickstarter – even $1 helps!

3. Spread the word about Sword & Plough on Twitter and Facebook!

In an age of tech it is easy to forget about the potential of physical products. Supporting American industry and American veterans has never been easier or more stylish.
